Movies for Wednesday January 6, 2010

On January 6 in 1913 Loretta Young was born... so the theme for today are movies with Loretta Young. Considered to be one of hollywoods leading ladies of the thirties and forties, she starred in dozens of movies for a number of decades. Today's list will be another opportunity for me to expand my repertoire of these early films as there are few that I am familiar with that star this siren of the silver screen... hope you enjoy my picks.

1 The Farmer's Daughter (1947) Director H.C. Potter
Young won an oscar for her portrayal of a farm girl who makes it into politics...

2 Come to the Stable (1949) Director Henry Koster
Gave Young her second oscar nomination for this lesser known holiday movie about two nuns who buck the system to build a children's hospital.

3 The Bishop's Wife (1947) Director Henry Koster
Better known Christmas classic with Cary Grant as an angel who comes to the aid of Bishop Brougham (David Niven) while charming his beautiful neglected wife (Young). Later remade as The Preacher's Wife starring Whitney Houston.

4 Kentucky (1938) Director David Butler
Story of two young lovers from feuding families falling in love against all odds. Walter Brennan won best supporting actor for his role.

Since I have only seen one movie starring Loretta Young (The Bishop's Wife) I look forward to feedback on these picks. Hope this will prove to be good viewing for all... enjoy.
