On January 7 1964 Nicolas Cage was born... so the theme for today are movies with Nicolas Cage. Nicolas Cage has been in many blockbuster hits as well as a number of independent and critically acclaimed films throughout his far reaching career within the movie industry. Nephew of famous director Francis Ford Coppola, Cage changed his name to make it on his own merit, despite his Hollywood pedigree. I hope that these picks will provide hours of entertainment-enjoy....
1 Leaving Las Vegas (1995) Director Mike Figgis
All time favourite film which won Cage an Academy Award for his role as washed up screenwriter who decides to drink himself to death. Co-star Elisabeth Shue is equally moving in her role as a prostitute that Cage befriends during his last days. Wonderfully painful and touching film... a must see.
2 Adaptation (2002) Director Spike Jonze
Wonderfully compelling and eccentric film about the life of a writer and the book that he is attempting to finish. Great acting by Cage as he plays dual roles of identical twin brothers... fun and quirky - Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper are also amazing.
3 Birdy (1984) Director Alan Parker
Lesser known film by young Cage who returns from his tour of duty to face demons and reunite with his friend who has also been scarred from Vietnam... both Cage and Matthew Modine are great...
4 Matchstick Men (2003) Director Ridley Scott
Nicholas Cage and Sam Rockwell give good performances as small time con artists who are beat at their own game-engaging film.
5 Valley Girl (1983) Director Martha Coolidge
Fun quirky film which put Nicholas Cage on the map as an actor... great to watch him in one of his earliest roles.
6 Moonstruck (1987) Director Norman Jewison
Sweeping film which won many oscars with Cage and Cher as unlikely lovers set against the romance of New York city... Olympia Dukakis is particularly good as matriarch of the Castorini family.
7 Raising Arizona (1987) Director Joel Coen
Offbeat cult hit by the Coen brothers starring Cage as a hapless ex-con who kidnaps a child to start a family. John Goodman is amazing as his ex-con buddy.
8 Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) Director Amy Heckerling
If you blink you would miss Cage in one of his first roles in this mindless but fun teen comedy.
9 The Rock (1996) Director Michael Bay
Over the top fun action film starring Cage...
10 Wild at Heart (1990) David Lynch
Weirdly wonderful road movie with Cage and Laura Dern as young lovers on the run... not for everyone
11 8MM (1999) Director Joel Schumacher
Little known somewhat compelling attempt at capturing the underground pornography industry.
I hope that these picks will provide a good variety of films highlighting Nicholas Cage's complex career... hope you enjoy.
