Movies for Monday January 4, 2010

On January 4 in 1954 Elvis Presley records demo at Sun Records where he is noticed by owner Sam Phillips .... so the theme for today is movies associated with the "King". I was always fascinated by the endearing legacy that Elivs Presley continues to maintain. An undisputed talent for many... he also left his mark on cinema. As I have only seen a select few films on this list of picks... I look forward to watching them and providing feedback of these movies that won over many critics-enjoy!

Starring Elvis:
1 King Creole (1958) Director Michael Curtiz
One of Elvis Presley's first efforts and considered by many to be his best film (Including Elivis himself) shot in black and white and co-starring Walter Matthau as New Orleans Crime Boss...

2 Jailhouse Rock (1957) Director Richard Thorpe
Also considered to be one of his better films... the dance sequence for title song "Jailhouse Rock" is considered by many to be "one of his best musical performance onscreen".

3 Change of Habit (1969) Director William A. Graham
One of his last films with Elvis as the handsome doctor and Mary Tyler Moore as a nun and his romantic conquest...

Linked to Elvis:
1 Rebel without a Cause (1955) Director Nicholas Ray
Rumored to be one of Presley's favourite films of all time... James Dean plays up angst like no other-mesmerizing.

2 Forrest Gump (1994) Director Robert Zemeckis
Engaging film that follows the life of simple man who is present for many historic moments including the rise of Elvis.

3 Mystery Train (1989) Director Jim Jarmusch
Lesser known critically acclaimed film about the spirit of Elvis on the lives of different occupants of a Memphis hotel... look for cameo by Steve Buscemi

4 Bubba Ho-tep (2002) Director Don Coscarelli
Cult favourite with Elvis battling an ancient mummy... not for everyone.

Well, since I have only seen a select few of the movies on this list of picks (Rebel without a Cause & Forrest Gump) I also look forward to expanding my viewing pleasure-hope you enjoy and I look forward to your feedback.

  1. I just finished watching Change of Habit today... and I am not sure if it can be put into the so bad it's good category-it was pretty over the top riddled with cliche and stereotypes. Mildly interesting but for the most part pure cheese.
