Movies for Monday January 11, 2010

On January 11 in 1964 United States Surgeon General Dr. Luther Leonidas declares (for the first time) that cigarettes may be hazardous to health... so the theme for today are movies based on the theme of tobacco...

1 The Insider (1999) Director Michael Mann
A researcher comes under attack when he decides to expose Big Tobacco... fascinating film with great performances by Russell Crowe and Al Pacino. Won a number of Academy awards including Best Picture, Best Actor (Crowe) & Best Director (Mann)-great film...

2 Thank you for Smoking (2005) Director Jason Reitman
Satirical look at the Big Business of Tobacco Companies-with Aaron Eckhart as chief spokesman pushing cigarettes onto the masses...

3 Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) Director Jim Jarmusch
Lesser known film by Jim Jarmusch which shows a number of vignettes around people chatting (and other things) over coffee and cigarettes...

I tried very hard to come up with films that would also depict the negative consequences of smoking but was at a loss... so here are my top picks for today which are great films that focus more on the business of the tobacco industry (well the first two at least). As I have only seen one of the films (The Insider) I look forward to feedback... enjoy!
