Movies for Friday January 8, 2010

On January 8, 1947 David Bowie was born... so the theme for today are David Bowie and Glam rock based movies. David Bowie is not only a talented musician, but a skilled entertainer which spans many different areas including the cinema. He also, in many critics opinions, was one of the key individuals for creating the spectacle of Glam rock which continues to influence not only musical entertainment, but also inspired a number of films that depicted the Glam rock genre. I hope that the following picks will not only be cinematically satisfying but also will be fun and musically entertaining as well-enjoy.

1 The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) Director Martin Scorcese
Controversial film based on the book by Nikos Kazantzakis depicting Jesus Christ as a man who faces the temptation to live a normal life. Fascinating movie which garnered director Martin Scorcese an oscar nomination.

2 Basquiat (1996) Director Julian Schnabel
Interesting film about the rise of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat... David Bowie plays the infamous Andy Warhol.

3 The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) Director Nicolas Roeg
Bowie stars as an alien who comes to earth to get water to save his planet and encounters the evils of mankind...

4 Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983) Director Nagisa Oshima
Film with Bowie playing the role of a British prisoner of war in Japan in WWII emphasizing contrasting cultures of East and West

5 The Huger (1983) Tony Scott
Vampire film with David Bowie... Catherine Deneuve is the beautiful femme fatale...

6 Into the Night (1985) Director John Landis
LIttle known film starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer as two people who get caught up in a night of unexpected intrigue.

1 Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1973) Director D.A. Pennebaker
Film that captures David Bowie's last concert as persona Ziggy Stardust.

2 Phanton of the Paradise (1974) Director Brian De Palma
Glam Rock Opera version of the Phantom of the Opera with music by Paul Williams- fantastic spectacle...

3 Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) Director Jim Sharman
Quirky cult hit starring Susan Sarandon before she became a Hollywood heavyweight. Also catapulted Tim Curry into mainstream stardom.

4 Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) Director John Cameron Mitchell
Mitchell directs and stars in rock opera film based on hit play of the same name...

5 Velvet Goldmine (1998) Director Todd Haynes
Movie about newspaper reporter (Christian Bale) investigating the career of Glam rock star (Ewan Mcgregor)- Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.

I hope these picks prove to be enjoyable... since I have seen only a select few from the above list (The Last Temptation of Christ; Basquiat; The Hunger; Ziggy Stardust; Phantom of the Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show) I also look forward to expanding my viewing pleasure with these picks... enjoy !
