Movies for Monday September 20, 2010

On September 20 1934 Italian bombshell Sophia Loren was born. Blessed with beautiful looks, Loren was also an Academy Award winning actress. With this in mind, the theme for today will be films with Sophia Loren-enjoy!

1 Two Women (1960) Director: Vittorio De Sica
Film about a woman and her daughter experiencing the harsh realities of war; Loren won an Oscar for her performance...

2 A Special Day (1977) Director: Ettore Scola
Sophia Loren plays Antonietta, a woman who is married to a man who leaves to attend an historic event. While she is left alone in her tenement she strikes up a friendship with a neighbour (Marcello Mastrionni) while her husband is away...

3 Grumpier Old Men (1995) Director: Howard Deutch
Light sequel to comedy about two older neighbour friends who have been in a rivalry since one of them stole the others wife-Loren plays the new older beauty who moves onto the street...

As I have seen only one film from the above list (Grumpier Old Men) I look forward to your feedback-enjoy!

  1. I'm not usually fond of Italian films but Two Women is extrememly well done and Sophia's performance is stunning. Very sensual and erotic in parts and extrememly disturbing in other parts (like the part where her and her teenage daughter are gangraped by soldiers). I'd skip over that part if I watched it again.

  2. Saw the first Grumpy Old Men which Sophia was not in, and did not find it funny despite great cast. Did not see Grumpier Old Men.

  3. I agree that these films are not all that funny, but are interesting to watch for the great cast-Burgess Meredith was somewhat amusing in his role as a dirty old man...
