Movies for Sunday October 3, 2010

October 3rd is known as Germany Unity Day, which is a national day in Germany that commemorates the anniversary of the German reunification that took place in 1990. With this day in history in mind, the theme for today will be films from Germany-enjoy!

1 The Lives of Others (2006) Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Tells the story of an agent of the secret police assigned to conduct surveillance on a writer and his companion-beautifully written and acted; won Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film...

2 Das Boot (1981) Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Follows the lives of a German U-Boat crew during WWII-not for the claustrophobic;was nominated for several Oscars including Best Director and Writing...

3 M (1931) Director: Fritz Lang
Disturbing film about the hunt for a child murderer (Peter Lorre)- Lorre is great in his performance...

4 Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Story about an older woman who starts a relationship with a younger man to the disapproval of many...

As I have seen all of the movies from the above list except one (Ali: Fear Eats the Soul) I look forward to your feedback on these picks-enjoy!

  1. M is a brilliant film but they're are at least two versions. I think in the uncensored one he actually gets off on a legal tachnicality, or goes to a hospital instead of jail. The version most people have seen ends abruptly, and ot the way Lang wanted.
