Movies for Friday June 11, 2010

June 11th is Davis Day, also known as Miners Memorial Day, which is an annual day of remembrance observed in coal mining communities in Nova Scotia Canada for those who died on the job. With this day in mind, the theme for today will be films about miners-enjoy!

1 Harlan County U.S.A. (1976) Director: Barbara Kopple
Academy Award winning documentary about the violent miners strike that took place in Harlan County...

2 Matewan (1987) Director: John Sayles
Film about a labour union that attempts to infiltrate a town dominated by a mining company...

3 Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) Director: Michael Apted
Movie based on the real life of famous country singer Loretta Lynn (Sissy Spacek)-Spacek won an Oscar for her portrayal, and Tommy Lee Jones is also great in his role as Lynn's husband...

4 My Bloody Valentine (1981) Director: George Mihalka
Horror film about deranged miner who is killing kids in the community; also remade in 3D; over the top fun for those who like goofy slasher films...

As I have seen all but two of the above films (Harlan County U.S.A. & Matewan) I look forward to your feedback-enjoy!
