Movies for Monday December 6, 2010

December 6th is the feast day of Saint Nicholas... he had a reputation for secret gift giving where he left coins in shoes that were left out for him, and so became the model for Santa Claus. With this feast day in mind, the theme for today will be films with Santa Claus-enjoy!

1 Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Director: George Seaton
When a nice old man (Edmund Gwenn) claims to be Santa Claus and goes on trial, a young lawyer decides to defend him and help him prove himself; Gwenn is good in his role, which garnered him an Academy Awrad & Natalie Wood is also good as a girl who doesn't believe in him-film also won Oscar for Best Writing; remade in 1994...

2 Bad Santa (2003) Director: Terry Zwigoff
A despicable conman (Billy Bob Thornton) poses as Santa Clause in order to rob department stores on Christmas Eve, and begins to find the Christmas Spirit after meeting a troubled kid; Thornton is good in his role...

3 Santa Claus (1985) Director: Jeannot Szwarc
Tells a complex story of Santa Claus and his elf (Dudley Moore) and their fight to keep Santa's tradition alive amidst growing commercialization...
